Below are some of the highlights from our recent mission trip to Honduras. (More news from Honduras will be shared later). |
1. Our team of 12 missionaries built a new house for a family of 4 adults and 7 children in one day. One of the children, Hector, is six years old, Deaf and attends Happy Hands School for the Deaf and New Life Deaf Ministry. The house was 12 feet by 12 feet. The old house was torn down and new wood and a corrugated tin roof was put on. Water is kept in a rusting steel barrel. There is electricity for t.v., refrigerator and one florescent light bulb. House has a dirt floor. The materials cost $700. Hector was very happy with his new home. |
2. The team led the Sunday evening worship for New Life Deaf Ministry in Tegucigalpa. Rev. Tom preached in "LESHO" (Lengua de Senas de Honduras - Honduran Sign Language) and led two signed songs in LESHO: "Jesus Working on the Inside" and " Honduras will be Saved". Other team members did a drama based on Ephesians 2:19-22. There were 60 Deaf people who came that night. Total membership of the church is around 200 Deaf persons. Morning worship is in sign language and is voiced in Spanish for hearing visitors & members. |
3. The team led a two day Vacation Bible School program in Siguatepeque, a small town that is two hours drive from Tegucigalpa. The first day, 20 deaf children came to the VBS. The second day, 35 deaf children, teens and some young adults came. Team members led four activities: crafts, snack making, fingerspelling, and story telling. The team did two dramas based on the "Lost Sheep" Luke 15, and "The Good Samaritan" Luke 10:25. After each drama, deaf children were invited to act out the drama for themselves. A local t.v. station did a report on our work. |
4. Team members did some work around New Life Deaf Ministry. A special mural needed to be touched up. Clothes and school supplies were given to the Happy Hands School. Twenty six deaf children between the ages of 5 and 7 attend Happy Hands. This school is the only school for the Deaf in Honduras that is taught in LESHO (Honduran Sign Language). |
5. We returned to Dallas early Saturday morning on July 9th. We were delayed in Miami because of rain from Hurricane Dennis. |
6. This is an exciting ministry. New Life Deaf Ministry is raising a new generation of Deaf Christians in Honduras. There are five cities in Honduras that wants New Life Deaf Ministry to start a deaf school & church for them. Also, NLDM is looking at building a permanent residence school in Tegucigalpa. The need is great! |
