Hey y'all,
We spoke in class recently about some candles that were in a dark storage closet (excerpted from Max Lucado's "God Came Near"). When the power went out, the homeowner dusted off the candles and lit one up. As he was about to leave the room, he heard a voice (coming from the candle no less)! To make a long story short, the candle was "not ready" to leave the closet and light the outer rooms because it wasn't prepared. What if it made a mess of things? Giving light is serious business! The other candles were either meditating on what it means to give light, too busy to change their schedules or thought they were better suited for another calling. These are candles, mind you. Their purpose is to give light. In the end, the candles remained in the closet singing "This Little Light of Mine" but refusing to fulfill what they were created for.
"Desire is a treasure map. Knowledge is the treasure chest. Wisdom is the jewel. Yet without action they all stay buried. Hope is the pillar that holds up the world." - Pliny the Elder (23-79 A.D.)
Our discussion then continued to the parable of the talents (Matt. 25:14-30), where each servant was given talents according to their ability. Those who had 5 and 2 talents respectively doubled what they started with. The servant with one talent was fearful and buried it in the ground. When the master returned, he praised those who made something with what they were given, but chastised the one who buried it saying that he was wicked and lazy. At least he could have banked it and returned it with interest. "For to everyone who has shall more be given, and he shall have an abundance, but the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away."
Not everyone has a multitude of talents, but everyone IS good at something. So what is your passion? What makes you come alive? Are you content to sing about life but stay locked away in a dark closet never experiencing it? Wanna get plugged in? There is absolutely no substitute for action and there's no time like the present. Whatever your interests are, we have a place for you! When you get your mind off yourself and get involved helping others, the blessings can be limitless!

THOUGHTS of the week:
"Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation leans on the doorbell." - Anonymous
"Nothing raises the price of a blessing like its removal; whereas it was its continuance which should have taught us its value. There are three requisitions to the proper enjoyment of earthly blessings,--a thankful reflection on the goodness of the Giver, a deep sense of our unworthiness, a recollection of the uncertainty of long possessing them. The first would make us grateful; the second, humble; and the third, moderate." - Hannah More
"Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticize me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I may not forget you."- William Arthur
"Nine requisites for contented living: Health enough to make work a pleasure. Wealth enough to support your needs. Strength to battle with difficulties and overcome them. Grace enough to confess your sins and forsake them. Patience enough to toil until some good is accomplished. Charity enough to see some good in your neighbor. Love enough to move you to be useful and helpful to others. Faith enough to make real the things of God. Hope enough to remove all anxious fears concerning the future." - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

PULSE Singles Ministry Mission:
Bringing single adults together into the Church, developing faith in God through Jesus Christ, growing in discipleship through the Holy Spirit, and living life to its fullest. |
|
About our STUDY....
Watch a small child follow a parent through the snow - stretching to step in the parent's footsteps. Not an easy task. The parent then starts taking smaller steps so the child can follow. It's a picture of discipleship! Paul was a father in the faith to Timothy - a young minister who faced all sorts of challenges. Paul penned letters and gave practical advise on how to lead a church.
Even though some of us may not be church leaders, we all have similar challenges in life. Through Paul's patient, step-by-step instruction, we'll learn to watch our step.

Current series:
Life Lessons from TIMOTHY & TITUS
Who are you following? When you get where you are going, will it be where you intended? What kind of trail are you leaving? If someone follows your steps, will they arrive at the right place? This should be another great series!
- June 29: Christ's Power to Save (1 Tim. 1)
- July 6: Prayer & Worship (1 Tim. 2)
- July 13: Servant Leadership (1 Tim. 3)
- July 20: Believing the Truth (1 Tim. 4)
- July 27: Relationships (1 Tim. 5)
August 3: Guest Speaker Lisa Groothuis
"Family - Who is my Brother (or Sister, or Mother or Father)?"
- August 10: Contentment (1 Tim. 6)
"I have kept the faith." Paul had lost all his worldly possessions and basically left to die, but even facing death he picks up his pen to encourage Timothy one more time. Timothy never had another teacher like Paul. In fact, neither has the world. He was convinced of two facts - that he was lost and then saved, and he spent a lifetime telling every person who would listen. In the end, it cost him everything, for all he had was his faith. But in the end, his faith was all he needed.
- August 17: Strength in Suffering (2 Tim. 1)
- August 24: Perseverance (2 Tim. 2)
- August 31: Workers Pleasing to God (2 Tim. 2)
- September 7: Following the Truth (2 Tim. 3-4)
The letter to Titus was the result of 2 storms - one that left Paul on the island of Crete, and the other a storm of relativism that left the Cretans with few values. By Paul's day, the society of Crete had a horrible reputation - right and wrong was determined by the situation. Enter Titus, who was sent to "finish the things that still need to be done" for the church - leadership principles & character being at the top of the list.
- September 14: Role Models (Titus 1-2)
- September 21: Life in the Spirit (Titus 3)

New Construction Underway Soon!
You’ve been hearing about the Hearing the CALL Capital Funding Mission for some time, and soon you’ll begin to see work in progress! The construction of Shipp Chapel and the Hospitality corridor are divided into two phases. Phase I begins in April, and will focus on the South (Visitor) Parking Lot. During this 2-month phase, new sidewalks, driveway changes, temporary entrances and walkways will be constructed.
When Phase I is completed, the South (Visitor) Parking Lot will reopen for the remaining construction projects. Phase 2 - construction of Shipp Chapel and the Hospitality corridor - begins in June, and the Parking Lot north of the Sanctuary will be restricted. Renewed Spirit Prison Ministry Needs Volunteers
Renewed Spirit, the faith-based Life Skills course that Lovers Lane provides to the Dawson Prison in Dallas, will begin a new session in February. We had a very successful session this past year. We received excellent feedback from the women inmates and also from the wardens. Our volunteer group is very enthusiastic about the work we are doing there. We help facilitate when we engage in small group discussions. If you have an interest in participating in this ministry or have questions, please contact Jo Ann Trimble, 214.750.8049, or Betty Korioth, 972.247.4336. We welcome and encourage new volunteers.
What Are Life Groups?
This fall at Lovers Lane you can experience Life Groups! We will begin many Life Groups in September and October. Why? These intimate groups of 8-12 people are the most effective way to provide caring for one another and steady spiritual growth. These groups may be composed of couples, single adults, women only, men only, adults and children, or any combination of these. Whatever the grouping or affinity, participants will learn the things that will make their family or single life work better. Life Group discussions will be open and free with emphasis on application to daily life. The leader of each Life Group receives careful training and supervision. Contact Donna Whitehead, 214.706.9520, for info about Life Group training.
