Lovers Lane and Giving
Have you been astounded, as I have, at the stories we've been receiving about lives that have been changed? Each Sunday as I receive our beautiful new edition of Crossweavings, I look for the "Changing Lives Love Letter." Some letters are about a person whose name I've never heard; others are stories I have never heard about someone I thought I knew very well! Each story is a true example of how this church makes a difference in the life of a member, or of someone we have reached out and touched.
Please notice that I said "we" reached out and touched. Several times in the past few weeks, I have heard a member say "they" when speaking of our church (as in "they do so and so." or "they don't do whatever.") It makes me wonder who they believe is the church. Many years ago, my husband Uel and I were teachers in a fifth grade Sunday school class. We often used a song titled "We Are the Church." The words included
"I am the church, you are the church, we are the church together."
"The church is not a building, the church is not a steeple, the church is not a resting place, the church is a people."
and, even more appropriate for LOVERS LANE,
"We're many kinds of people, with many kinds of faces, all colors and all ages, too, from all times and places."
As often with the simplest of ideas, the words are also profound.
I hope we will take time to reflect on the meaning of our own membership in Christ's church.
  • If the "Changing Lives Love Letter" were about me, what would it say?
  • If we catch ourselves using "they" to describe LOVERS LANE, will we ask ourselves why?
  • If every other member gave the same amount of time or the same percentage of his or her income, what would we as a church be doing?
Today, I give thanks for each of you and for all we are doing together to change lives for Christ.
In Christ's Love,
 Margaret Crosby
