YOUR INVITATION TO THE 2009 INTERNATION HAYDN FESTIVAL

The Sanctuary Choir cordially invites all able-bodied world-travelers who love great choral music to join the Lovers Lane Sanctuary Choir for a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience to Vienna, Austria, in the summer of 2009. The Sanctuary Choir has accepted a generous invitation to perform Joseph Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass with the Dallas Festival Chorus in the Wiener Konzerthall in Vienna, one of the great metropolitan centers of artistic achievement. The context for this remarkable experience is the 2009 International Haydn Festival, celebrating the 200 th anniversary of the death of Joseph Haydn, in the heart of the city made famous by renowned composers Haydn, Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms. The tour will take place from June 25 through July 4, 2009, and will include numerous concert events at many of the greatest performance halls in the world. Please consider this unique opportunity to experience one of the most beautiful “corners of the globe” and to nurture spiritual friendships with members of our beloved Sanctuary Choir. In order to secure our church’s reservation for this event, initial individual commitments are due by November 15. To learn more information about this special opportunity, please contact Jimmy Emery at 214.706.9591 or jemery@llumc.org.

Outreach

“ God has given each of you some special abilities; be sure to use them to help each other, passing on to others God’s many kinds of blessings.” - 1 Peter 4:10

May 2008

Recent Events:

Everybody’s Picnic

The Young Adults, Youth, and Crosswalk Worship group provided a picnic for the homeless on May 3. The event was held at Exall Park near Baylor Hospital, and the weather was great for games, hot dogs, snacks, and fellowship. Over 500 hot dogs were served and there were many opportunities for fun and one-on-one conversation with our brothers and sisters who are homeless.

Peanut Butter Drive

In April the North Texas Food Bank was the recipient of over 1,300 jars of peanut butter collected at the church. The effort was part of a Dallas metro area “Oprah Big Give” drive for thousands of jars of peanut butter. The peanut butter will be given to children in gift bags distributed at schools. A side benefit was an Albertsons donation of 60 cases of soup that was delivered to N. Dallas Shared Ministry.

Easter Love Offering

More that $32,000 was donated this year for the Easter Love Offering. The funds are used to support the activities of social service providers in Dallas and throughout the world. Thank you for the gifts that will make a difference in the lives of others. The next Love Offering will be in the fall and is named Helping Hands.

19 th Annual Trinity River Mission Golf

On April 28 the church held a golf tournament at Stonebriar Country Club that was a benefit for the Believe and Achieve Scholarship fund of Trinity River Mission. Ninety plus golfers and volunteers were there for a beautiful day of golf and fund raising for an outstanding program for West Dallas families. The gross receipts exceeded $40,000. Thanks to Chairman Tom Railsback and his steering committee of King Buckner, Jim Gibbs, Max Lindsay, David Nethery, and Jim Thornton.

Russia Initiative

In 1993 Lovers Lane was partnered with a city in Russia ( Volgograd) to have a cultural exchange. The goal of the church was to establish a United Methodist congregation in that city. Each year teams of Lovers Lane volunteers traveled to Volgograd to work in hospitals, older adults homes, and to build a playground area for youth. Our Jazz Band also traveled to Volgograd and performed several benefit concerts. The Russians have sent two adult teams and one youth team to Dallas to expand the exchange. In 1998 a United Methodist congregation was begun and continues today. The United Methodist Church has grown to 106 congregations in Russia, and the seminary in Moscow is training Russian ministers to spread the denomination even further over the next few years.

Nothing but Nets

Malaria is a deadly disease that is rampant in Africa. The Nothing but Nets program provides a net that repels the mosquitoes carrying the disease. The net surrounds the bed and protects the children, youth, and adults. The net only costs $10 and will last several years. A concert on May 2 was sponsored by the Single Adult program of the church and the beneficiary was the net program. Over $7,000 was raised so 700 nets can be provided to save lives.

Africa University

Africa University is a United Methodist school in Zimbabwe. It was created in 1992 and provides a quality education to Africans from many of the surrounding countries. On April 27 the Africa University Choir performed a concert at Lovers Lane, and it was hosted by our Heart of Africa and Zimbabwe Fellowships. A meal of African cuisine was served following the concert. The North Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church has a goal of $1,000,000 to be provided for the growth of Africa University. The African Choir concert proceeds will be contributed for this goal and more opportunities for fundraising will be forthcoming.

BITE BACKHelp End Malaria.  I am encouraging the each teenager to bring $10 the next several Sundays.  $10 will buy a net and will save a life in Africa"If you think you’re too small to make a difference, try sleeping in a room with a mosquito." Every African knows this is true because mosquitoes carry malaria—a tropical disease that kills over 750,000 children each year. That’s one child every 30 seconds. In Africa, mosquitoes make a huge difference in the lives of poor families and children. And it all starts with a tiny bite.  Malaria begins with a bite. We believe that generation change can end malaria with an even bigger bite. The BITE BACK campaign is mobilizing youth around the country to purchase 300,000 mosquito nets to protect African children from malaria. Let’s be the generation that ends malaria.  http://biteback.net/
*Please help remind your children about this.
