| David G. Burnet Elementary School 3200 Kincaid Drive Dallas, TX 75220 972-794-3000 Principal: Judy Meyer |
Burnet is one of the largest elementary schools in the state, with almost 1500 students in grades PD-6. The students are predominately Hispanic, most from low-income neighborhoods. Now in the 8th year of a strong education partnership with Burnet, Lovers Lane UMC provides a dedicated team of volunteers who work with students, typically one hour a week on campus during the school day--reading, helping with math and other academic skills, mentoring, caring and building confidence and character. |
| Lovers Lane small groups and individual volunteers have also provided educational materials, campus improvement projects and donations of clothes and toys for needy families. | |
| There are many opportunities to connect with students and make a lasting positive impact on their education and development. The school is close to the church--and the students are the sweetest people you could ever know. If you like being around children, you will love giving part of your heart to them. | |
| What can you do? | |
| Read with a student, or help a student with math or language assignments (orientation is provided). volunteers typically support one teacher by working with selected students (of a grade level of their choice) weekly through the school year. Bonds are often formed, which carry over to later years. You don't have to be a teacher--you just need to care about children and their futures. It is a rewarding way to make a difference. | |
| Support a teacher by providing needed classroom supplies. | |
| Help with occasional campus improvement projects | |
| Make donations of clothing for needy families through the school's community liaison program. | |
