Texas HOPE Literacy, Inc. was born in the heart of Lucy Smith in 1997 after discovering the severity of the illiteracy in Texas prisons.  Upon investigation she learned that a large percentage of inmates have undiagnosed learning disabilities and most were leaving the prison still unable to read.  Ms. Smith concluded that without reading skill these individuals would have little chance of living a full and productive life, and many prison programs designed to rehabilitate them would be ineffective.

HOPE Literacy is a non-profit organization whose objective is to provide a vehicle for adult inmates, incarcerated juvenile offenders, and at risk youth to receive intervention and remediation so they can become productive citizens.
HOPE Literacy is a volunteer dependent program where volunteers from the community are trained to serve as tutors for youth with learning disabilities and those found to be functionally illiterate.  Volunteer trainers teach adult inmates to become coaches for fellow inmates with reading problems.
What can you do?

Volunteer to tutor individuals.
