HONORARY CHAIR OF MARKETPLACE 2008 CHOSEN Barbara Wiggins

Former LLUMW President, N TX Conference UMW President and longtime UMW Champion Barbara Wiggans was chosen as the Honorary Chair of Marketplace 2008! The announcement was made to Barbara at her Deborah Circle meeting where all the members surprised her with a song of Congratulations and a bouquet of beautiful pink roses.

Barbara said, “I am overwhelmed!!! Thanks to all of you so much. It is truly an outstanding honor and I am thrilled, of course!!! All of you mean so much to me and so does this mission event.”

With Barbara as our guiding light, we look forward to our 12th Annual Marketplace November 21 – 23.

SCHOOLS OF CHRISTIAN MISSION were started early in the last century for young women. Today we know that all of us benefit from mental stimulation. Each year there is a Bible study, a geographical study and a social issue study. These studies are well prepared and encourage thoughts and discussion in class and at home. You’ll participate in a study for 4 class sessions (a total of 8 hours and leave with an expanded mind that will aid you for years as you process the world news.
Fellowship, study and worship are woven into the SOCM experience. Your spiritual growth will be stimulated by experiencing worship that is tied to your studies in both class and plenary sessions (with the entire school community). Imagine a renewed sense of your own calling and a deeper understanding of the missions of UMW. LLUMW invests in their members by reimbursing for SOCM tuition. A study book will cost $10 or less. Contact Wendy Campbell (972-458-8173 or wjpc@swbell.net) for more information.

Youth volunteers in grades 7-12 are welcome with adults.
GIFTS FROM THE HEART nominations are now being sought for recipients of funds from the sale of these cards at the 2008 Marketplace. These are the guidelines:
  1. Beneficiaries should be Missions benefiting women, children and youth.
  2. Donated funds will benefit group needs rather than an individual's needs.
  3. We want to educate the masses about UMW missions that are local, national and international, so we choose one of each to promote.
  4. The missions should have Methodist ties.
  5. A mission will not be chosen in two consecutive years.
Contact Marion Streeder (972-712-8147 or amstreder@tx.rr.com ) by August 1st so that the nominations can be discussed at the August Marketplace meeting.

PLAN AHEAD AND PUT THIS ON YOUR CALENDAR NOW!
UMW EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING: We will meet again on August 26th. Contact Liz Shorey (jimsho@prodigy.net or 214.691.0490)
SEPTEMBER GENERAL GATHERING
We will be screening the heartbreaking and provocative documentary film TO DIE IN JERUSALEM at our September 2 General Gathering. After two 17-year old girls - one an Israeli, the other a Palestinian suicide bomber - die in a Jerusalem market, their mothers confront each other, revealing a microcosm of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the complexity of reconciliation. Through the personal stories of the two families' losses and by contrasting the lives and deaths of these two teenage girls, TO DIE IN JERUSALEM offers a personal human perspective that is all too often eclipsed by the political issues. One of 5 films you don't want to miss.
All are welcome to this event that begins with coffee and refreshments at 9:30. Celebrate Back to School time by getting together with your UMW friends for a morning matinee!
DALLAS-DENTON DISTRICT ANNUAL MEETING: Officers and those who want to understand more about UMW should attend this very informative event and worship service, September 6th. Plymouth Park UMC in Irving, 8:30 am – noon.
N. TX CONFERENCE ANNUAL MEETING will be October 11th at First UMC in MCKinney. Once again, officers and anyone who wants to understand more about UMW should attend this worthwhile annual event, 8:30 am – noon. There will most likely be a car pool from LLUMC.
A MORNING APART: Spiritual Renewal? Yes, you know that you need it and you know you will be busy, so plan now to set a morning apart to recharge yourself and reconnect spiritually . This important event will be provided for us by the Dallas-Denton District team at Christ UMC in Farmers Branch, Saturday morning, November 1st, 8:30 am – noon.
