August Alleluias to Brush Arbor
Today, we are in our eighth year of August Alleluias. During this time, Lovers Lane dresses down and gears up for tremendous worship services on the five Sundays of August. It is a time for us to connect with the old camp meetings, especially as felt through the joyful singing of favorite hymns.
Sunday mornings in August Alleluias 2008 will see us continuing to develop our in-depth message series Visions & Voices of Truth. As a part of August Alleluias, we will be celebrating Student Ministries Sunday with our Youth Pastor, Grant Myers bringing the message, “The Little Leader.” Sunday evening August 10 at 6pm, we will have another opportunity to gather in Asbury Hall with the Crosswalk Worship team for A Night of Worship. Rev. Shanté Buckley will be bringing the message for this all church gathering. August Alleluias will crescendo with our Brush Arbor Celebration that reminds us all to continually rekindle the Spirit of Revival in our midst.
August Alleluias is the Lovers Lane way to prepare for back to school times and the fall season. God is with us at all times! During August, I believe you will sense His presence in a very special way.
Grace and Peace,
Stan

Does Your Will Reflect Your Wishes?
A will is one of the most important documents you can own, yet surveys show only four out of ten Americans have current wills. Think of planning a will as preparing to improve and stabilize the financial security of yourself and your family. By thinking in this way, you put present goals first.
A current will provides one with an opportunity to distribute their estate according to his/her wishes. A current will offers: one last opportunity to express your values to your heirs; a chance to care for your heirs according to their special needs; and the occasion to make a gift to your charitable organizations of choice, including the Foundation at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church. For more information, please call Bettye Vanderwoude, Foundation Director, 214.706.9561 or bvanderwoude@llumc.org,

Lovers Lane UMC Foundation has established a Legacy Society for those members of the church who have included the Foundation in their estate planning through the following methods: will/bequests, trusts, gift annuities, insurance policies, gifts of stock and gifts of real estate. If you have included the Foundation in your estate planning, we invite you to become a Founding or Charter Member of the Legacy Society. Please contact Bettye Vanderwoude, 214.706.9561 or bvanderwoude@llumc.org, before December 31, 2008 for more information.

United Methodist Women General Gathering
Tuesday, September 2 in Asbury Hall. 9:30 Coffee. 10 AM meeting and the documentary film, To Die in Jerusalem. This film looks at the Israeli Palestinian conflict through the eyes of two grieving mothers. The cover of Newsweek framed the story starkly: side-by-side pictures of Ayat al-Akhras, an 18-year-old Palestinian suicide bomber, and 17-year-old Rachel Levy, killed by the bomb that Ms. Akhras detonated on March 29, 2002, at a Jerusalem supermarket. The two looked as if they could have been sisters and should have been living the lives of carefree teenagers, instead of becoming tragic symbols of the intractable Middle East conflict. The delicacy of the subjects allows an audience aware of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to consider it again in a way they haven't before. All interested persons are invited to the showing of this 76 minute film.

2008 has been a blessed year for Lovers Lane United Methodist Church! Just as the dirt begins flying and we initiate our exciting new building campaign, we have gained 3 more talented staff members who will all serve our myriad ministries with great distinction and devotion. They are Rev. Walt Lunde, Jr., Alice Sutherland, and Linda Koons.
Walt is the new Associate Minister of Pastoral and Congregational Care and is in charge of Senior Adult Ministries. He will also head up the Lovers Lane UMC Archives and History activities. He came to us after eight years service as Pastor of Pleasant Valley UMC in Sachse, TX. Walt is married to Cissy and they have 4 grown children. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Wisconsin, a Master of Business Administration in Management and Marketing and a Master of Divinity. He valiantly served his country as a U. S. Navy jet pilot for 26 years with 6,500 flight hours to his credit. Walt retired with the rank of Navy Captain. Imagine what a global perspective he brings to us after serving with NATO at bases in Iceland, England, Holland, Norway, Spain, the Azores, Bermuda and Japan!
Alice Sutherland is the Director of our Special Needs Ministry and will lead the Nursery and Preschool programs. She has already incorporated Night Lights into a separate 501(c)3. This will enable greater opportunities for fund raising and corporate partnerships to allow Night Lights to meet twice a month in 2009 and serve even more families. Her passion for Special Needs Ministries has doubled her volunteer team since her arrival here in 2008.
Alice earned a B. S. in Biomedical Engineering at U. C. L. A. and a M. S. in Clinical Nutrition. As the mother of a baby daughter, Alice is looking forward to the opening of our new nursery facilities, which are in the process of being built by our “Hearing the Call” Campaign!
Our third new Staff member is Linda Koons who will serve as our Minister of Hospitality. She earned a B. S. in Economics from Texas A&M. Linda was awarded a Master of Arts in Applied Economics from S.M.U. and Master of Divinity from Perkins. Her daughter and Linda are eager for our new Hospitality Corridor to be completed where they will welcome everyone with warm smiles and open hearts!

Mai Le
Mai Le:
The First Time I Read the Bible
The Bible was given to me as a gift before I became a Christian. A friend of mine suggested that I read it. He said, “I cannot wait to see what God is going to do with you!” I started out with the New Testament, page by page, but soon I lost interest. The gospel genre was too cryptic and incoherent. Worse yet, the main character of the story was crucified and died a violent death. I moved to the Old Testament and began with Genesis, the first book of the Bible. The Creation account was fascinating. But very soon, I became bogged down with stories of human issues: issues of a violent nature such as murder and vengeance; human relationship issues such as betrayal and adultery; issues of human condition such as slavery, oppression, and death, just to name a few. They were so disturbing, and seemed out of place in a sacred book.
It was not until the first Bible Study I attended with other Christians at Christ UMC in Plano that I came to see the divine grace amid human sinfulness. I now see love and grace, sacrifice and forgiveness, faith and repentance. Most importantly, I find in the Bible the story of a loving, gracious, and merciful God who pursues human beings endlessly to bring humanity back to the heart of the loving God, like a parent sets out to look for a child who tends to run away from home.
As September is just around the corner and as many students are going back to school and focusing again on reading and studying, why don’t we get into the habit of reading the Bible? With your church family, you can always rest assured that you will have reading partners when you join one of the many classes offered through ACTS and through the Disciple Bible Study Courses at Lovers Lane.
As Christians, we have the obligation to read and study the Bible. It is the treasure of the Christian family! When you study the Bible, expect many surprises. You might discover that your favorite characters are not so perfect; or you might discover that many of the Christian “do’s” and “don’ts” that others have quoted to you are just fiction and not truly divine commandments. And you might find a faith partner or a spiritual director who lights a lamp to guide your path.
The best of all is when the Bible works as a mirror for us to see ourselves. Sometimes we see ourselves as people who live up to Christian teaching; other times we see our actions as somewhat questionable, but still humanly acceptable; and then there will be times when we see ourselves as totally detestable. When this happens, do not cry, but rejoice because grace abounds for our mistakes and we can then begin to better reflect the nature and character of the Lord in our restoring character, one step at a time.
The Bible is a great and wonderful gift. Read it, study it, and be transformed.

New Logo Completed for the Lovers Lane Academy for the Deaf
The Board of the Lovers Lane Academy for the Deaf (LLAD) is pleased to announce that a logo has been chosen from among twenty-three designs submitted by six people.
The winning design was created by Tim Smoke, of Marshall, Texas. Tim’s original design had a heart superimposed upon a cross. LLAD
The LLAD board decided to replace that heart with the heart of thorns and “I Love You” ASL hand shape that is from our Deaf ministry logo, created by Molly DeVoss in 2006.
Deaf and son of retired Baptist missionaries, Tim learned about the logo contest from our Deaf ministry email newsletter. The block letters of “LLAD” in the design suggest a solid educational foundation that is held together by Christ’s love on the Cross. Tim will be receiving movie tickets and a LLAD shirt with the new logo. We thank Molly DeVoss, Tim Welch, Tom Crocker, Lossibeth and Mary Kay Hudspeth for their submissions. We also thank Tammy Dalke for her assistance in completing the finished logo design.
