| Jr. High Mission Trip:
San Francisco, CA July
6-10 |
Yes we are going back to San
Francisco. We will be feeding the homeless
at Glide Memorial Methodist Church.
Furthermore, we will be working with
underprivileged children in the community.
These ministry opportunities will be life
changing.
A little about Glide:
What began in 1969 as an all volunteer Monday
night potluck for 50 street people today
serves over 750,000 meals a year, making
Glide one of the largest providers in San
Francisco. Glide is also the only
program in town that provides three nutritious
meals to the city's poor, homeless and hungry
every single day of the year.
This amazing feat is accomplished in a snug
church kitchen commercial grade and two small
dining rooms that together can accommodate only
200 people at a time.
Glide strives to serve its meals in an
atmosphere of respect, acceptance and love. For
some who come to eat, Glide may be the only safe
and welcoming environment they experience in a
day's time.
All of this requires the talents of 27 staff
members who come primarily from the ranks of the
people who eat at Glide -- the poor, homeless,
formerly incarcerated and those with successful
recovery from substances and addictions. The staff
is supported by tens of thousands of volunteers
each year who lend their service.
Cost: $600
Non Refundable
Deposit: $300 due by March 16

Trip: Wiyot Indian Reservation Northern California
Coast
July
11-18 |
We will be working with the
Wiyot Tribe on their small but beautiful Table
Bluff Reservation. The reservation is very
near Loleta, California, located about 250 miles
north of San Francisco on Highway 101. We
will be staying at the Loleta Elementary School
and using their gym for sleeping and
program. The site is a few miles from the
ocean, so expect cool days and even cooler
nights. Our plans are undertake some serious
weatherization work on houses on the reservation,
including installing new windows and doors!
In addition to working on the tribe's Indian
Island restoration project.
A Typical Day At Sierra Service
Project · Wake-up takes place at 7:00am
followed by breakfast and an optional Spiritual
Awakening. Work groups then make their sack
lunches, collect their belongings and tools and
head out to their work projects. · The work
day is 9:00-4:00 with a break for lunch and a
Spiritual Sandwich (group discussion). · When
groups return from the work day, it is time for
showers and free time. Free time is spent at the
location where we are housed and includes sports,
crafts, cards, snacks and general hanging out with
new people! · Dinner is followed by community
chore time and evening program. Our evening
programs consists of singing, groups building
activities, reports from the various work sites
and programming related to our summer theme. One
evening is always devoted to learning about the
local community, including tribal culture,
traditions, history and future.
· After program it is time to put bedding out
and get ready for bed. The adult counselors
have a nightly meeting with members of the staff
to share joys, concerns and share information
about the plans for the next day. · Bedtime is
strictly enforced at SSP. We typically sleep in a
school gym and boys and girls are on separate
sides. The work we do at SSP is hard labor and
everyone needs to get a good night of sleep, every
night.
